There is a “Me” that is very confident, highly driven, fearless and beneath no one.
This “Me” also happens to have Beyoncé’s wind-blown hair even when coming out of a shower!
There is however another “me” who gets seen by my family and hairdresser about once every 2 months.
Nobody else is allowed to see this other version!
For you see, I was born with tightly coiled but relatively sparse African hair and was told more times than I can count that my hair would become dreadlocks left alone.
This is an irony as anyone who knows me will testify that I’m a “hair obsessive”. I don’t get the buzz about shoes, bags or designer wear, but I do totally get “hair”! I would often joke that my house would be a dilemma for any CSI agent as DNA of every race can be found in my hair extension drawer! Right now, I’m lusting after a Brazilian weave…
My self-esteem identifies with a “Me” that my mirror does not reflect. Sometimes, I get the two lined up just right and other times, I fail woefully. However, there is excitement in reinventing myself.
Nature gets things wrong more often than we admit. People are born with poor sight, hearing problems, heart problems, for all of which we readily accept medical remedies.
We don’t all get born with perfect teeth either. Sometimes, it’s nature’s “oops” and other times, it’s the result of lifestyle choices. But if the smile reflected in the mirror does not reflect the smile within, you can do something about it!
Isn’t the power of choice wonderful? So, raise your glass to the real you – the wonderful, fabulous you!
As for me, I’m off to buy some Brazilian weave 🙂
