The Year Of Boo
2017 has been a year of coming full circle and observing shifts within myself.
My expectations of Life, and my understanding of what Life expects of Me have expanded.
It has been a year of challenges, upheavals and change.
A year of letting go of long held beliefs,
And relinquishing dreams, when I finally realised they were never really mine.
This year, my insecurities were rekindled and brought right to the surface as I started a Masters program in Dental Implants;
But this year my strength was also renewed and my potentials intensified.
I have accomplished far more than I could have conceived.
However what I consider my greatest achievement is a more personal one…
Growing up in a polygamous family back in Nigeria, my Stepmother had a cat.
She had a name for it; Not a name really; more like a long phrase –
“Amoniseni; Epe nuse”
(Meaning I know who is responsible for my bad fortune)
An uneasy silence would fall among guests as she chose such times to call for her cat.
We lived in the same house and every time she called that cat, something in me burned!
A culture of respect demanded that I burned quietly…
But I’ve held a disdain for cats since.
However this year, one of my friends got a cat called “Boo”
And as I picked up my children from the babysitter at the end of a particularly long day,
Boo climbed onto my laps uninvited and purred contentedly in my arms as I stroked him…
The weight of past memories unburdened with every stroke.
Ending the year outwardly heavier;
Inwardly infinitely lighter.
Have a Lovely Christmas! 🙂
