It’s my cousin’s funeral today.
3 years older than myself, Funke had been born with Sickle Cell Anaemia- a disease which affects the ability of the blood to carry oxygen and nutrients.
As death often does, her passing sharpens my focus on what is truly important and I have personal regrets on not recognizing her brave spirit while alive.
At a recent management meeting with Lorraine our practice manager, I asked her what she is enjoying about her job right now. I was pleasantly surprised when her response was “The patients”. She said she was really enjoying getting to know more about patients and their fascinating history and peculiarities.
I told her that while chatting with patients must not divert one from tasks at hand, the undeniable truth is that we all flourish with connection. Yes, Dentistry is important for that is our job, but the human connection is a far greater part of the story.
It had been a delight to see patients who are going through tough times in their personal life emerge on the other side; I have been equally privileged to be on the receiving end when a patient has made a comment so appropriate to my inner conflict that I have responded with grateful tears.
So thank you for choosing us for your Dental care.
Hopefully, we can figure out this human connection thing together;
For that is all that matters at the end of it all.
